I was there, cleaning out the bedpans on that detention from Snape, remember?
Maybe it’s stretching, but seeing that Snape already gave the essay knowing perfectly that only Hermione will do it, could he tried to provoke Ron or Harry during his classes just to be able to give this detention?
That one of them would see that Lupin was not in the hospital wing?
Remember, he thinks that Lupin tries to help Black to kill Harry, and just after he saw Harry and Lupin alone in the DADA’s room, Black broke in the Gryffindor Tower.
He could use Harry’s friends to makes him doubt of Lupin.
