Some stuff I thought in
a_chapter_a_day, about the effects of the Dark Mark, and what Snape could think of Minerva (maybe already said).
Outside Voldy’s call and punishments by it, I don’t think he had a control on it, in the sense that it doesn’t hurt just because his name was pronounced.
I think he only convinced his DEs of that, and their fear make the rest. So when Snape clutches his arm in pain, he’s doing it himself, and believe it’s Voldy’s doing, when it’s only his fear. (From OOTP, contrary to other wizards, the DEs hiss when they heard 'Voldemort', instead of shudder.)
After all, we had magic who work with hate, love, calm, and other feelings, it wouldn’t be surprising that some works with the fear.
So when he shouts to Harry to not say the name, because it hurt him and think it’s the power of Voldy’s name, he’s sincere, because it’s what he believe.
And it’s why, when DD said the name, it doesn’t bother him. He trust DD’s power, and doesn’t afraid when with him, so when DD said ‘Voldemort’, his fear doesn’t engage the Mark’s power, because he’s not afraid.
But he doesn’t trust Harry, therefore, he’s scared completely when it’s Harry who said ‘Voldemort’. Plus the mind link and the possibility that if Voldy found that Snape heard his name, or called him otherwise than Dark Lord, he’ll know it and torture him by the Mark.
(After her anger when Fred and Harry attacked Draco two against one)
Or Minerva learned since the Marauders and Snape, or she always was like that, and it’s why Snape like her and never acts snappish with her, or discusses her decisions. He always shut up quickly when she gives him an order, when he glares to DD and still complain when he does not agree with him.
It’s what I wrote in another group, when someone asked if McGonagall was sometime as nasty as Snape:
We know another example where a student failed a spell and transform another student into a badger, and we (Harry) heard her screaming at him from the hallways.
Someone said Snape wanted to be like McGonagall, only he didn't understand everything.
He can see his preference to Slytherin like normal, if in his memories, he saw McGonagall let the Marauders without punishment but not him, or more strict with the Slytherins than with the Gryffindors.
But McGonagall is not someone without discipline, so the chance are that when she didn't punish the Marauders, it's was when she had no proof, but when she caught them, the detention was severe, and he realized that. If they escaped punishment from her, it wasn't favoritism, but the lack of proof. And it was why he followed them. Because he wanted proofs. It's an attitude he kept now, he didn't told about Quirrel to DD because he only had a feelings, not a proof.
I think he saw her like someone just, strict and fair, the incarnation of authority he likes.
And he wants to be like that, he thinks he's like that. But he doesn't know the limits.
