Yes, West, it's a trap. Claire cunningly made you spy her the day you met her, and all the other time. She made you humiliate her in class, force you to talk to her when she tried to avoid you, made you use your powers, use every reason possible to be with you. Frankly, I'm surprised you never saw how dangerous she was the moment she began to talk to you.
