8x05 Dead Air

I'll be honest, I was wary about this episode. Christopher Waild is a big Tiva fan and it showed in all his episodes, when writing with someone else and mainly when he wrote alone, Jetlag. And the heavy shippy anvils weren't the only problem in the episode.

So, I went in with low expectations and was nicely surprised.

Oooh, very nice intro. (+1)

And really nice Tony/McGee moment! Thinking they're talking about something big, and it's just baseball. With Tony having his McMind changed. (+1)

"For once, I think you might be right. You've changed my McMind. And I thank you, Tim."
"Tony, have you been drinking?"
"No. Why?"
"I could have sworn I just heard you thank McGee."
"Oh. I appreciate his insight."
"On what?"
"Baseball."
"Specifically, the implementation of instant replay in baseball."
"We have the technology, why not use it?"
"Bad calls hurt everyone."

"I do not know which is more disturbing--the fact that you both agree on something, or that McGee is a fan of a sport."
"It's not just that I'm a fan, Ziva. It is also, I'm..."
"American? Alive? It's October, Ziva. Reggie Jackson is Mr. October. Baseball has seeped into the native consciousness of this country."
"I do not feel any seeping."

"Well, maybe you just got to be born here."
"Come on, you two. It's just a game."
"It's our game. If you build it, they will come. Field of Dreams. Maybe that's speaking to the immigrant experience."
"I did not become an American citizen because of baseball."
"It's every kid's dream. Even McGee."
"It's true. Center fielder. Right on the list. Right before Imagineer. It's a hard day when you realize those dreams may not come true."
"Got to keep the dream alive, Tim."

...I have no idea of what Tim just said or why Tony's reacting like that.

Oh, another nice shot, with Ducky and Ziva talking on the background. (+1)

Tony, what are you doing?

Photobucket

"See, this is why podcasts were invented. Who needs the radio when you got the Internet?"
"People who don't have the Internet."
"Or those who prefer to listen while driving."
"Ah, they actually make a cell phone app for that now, Ducky."
"Got an app for doing your job, McGee?"

Photobucket

Photobucket
Photobucket

Love Ziva's fake laugh here in the same time than Tony.

"You know, I considered going into radio once."
"Hmm. Well, you certainly like to hear yourself talk."

Photobucket

Nice! Seems like Tony is again ridiculous and they show him actually working in the same time. (+1)

Photobucket

Is your mind as dirty as mine right now?

Photobucket
Photobucket

Aw, they're sharing the phrase!

Photobucket

You know, I never been in the camp of those complaining about Abby's quirkiness so I already like this scene as it is. But having it connected to her work, just her waiting for Gibbs? Good writing. (+1)

Are they referencing fandom? It wasn't nice to Waild back then.

"Here's one. "I would listen to your program more if you were on it less.""
"This one's nice. It's a marriage proposal from a woman who thinks that Gator would be just as sharp-tongued in the bedroom. It's good."
"Yeah, I get the sense these people have a little too much time on their hands."

Photobucket
Photobucket

Bzuh? The ones that love you looking at Ziva, the ones that hate you looking at Tim? He doesn't hate you, Tony.

"None of these are credible threats. Why would Gator keep them?"
"Guess you never know who's gonna get you--the ones that love you, or the ones that hate you."

And again Gibbs is the only one with Ducky and Abby who are confined to the morgue/lab. One recurrent complaint about season 7 people thought was over at the beginning of season 8. (-1)

Heeee, Gibbs smelling the pee.

"Well... we pretty much get what you mean by "die," but what I'm curious about is the "join.""

"Gibbs, are you trying to give me heart palpitations?"
"No. What do you got, Abbs?"
"Heart palpitations."

Photobucket

Ooooh, that was a very nice McGee/Ziva moment there. This look from Ziva!

Abby/Tony scene! (+1) Tony's not used to the Caff Pow like Abby and McGee.

"Listening to your conversations with the Royal Woods residents was so much more entertaining than listening to Adam Gator's phone calls."
"Well, thank you very much, I'm putting out a CD."

Photobucket

Tony's getting sick. And he noticed McGee's worry. From an interview, Michael was getting sick while filming and they incorporated it in the episode when he lost his voice. No acting there.

Aaaand here's the tiva moment. And maybe another fandom's reference with old Ziva. It was heavy handed, but not as bad as I feared. Still, (-1) for trying to rewrite Undercovers. Sorry Christopher, but Boxed In made it canon that nothing happened.

I'm going to think Tony is half playing with McGee's mind, half thinking of that time it wasn't his knee. Hmmm, maybe it's what Waild was aiming for.

Oh boy, silent Tony. For 24 hours. I think it was on one of my S8 wish list.

That was mean, Ducky! :D

"Merely some inflammation from overuse. Nothing to be concerned about. However, to prevent further damage, I suggest that you refrain from talking for the next 24 hours. I understand it won't be easy."
"But we certainly look forward to seeing you try."
"Yeah, well, let's hope there are no movie references that require your edification. I'd hate for your ego to write a check your body can't cash."
"Oh, I know that one. That's, um... Gone With the Wind, right?"
"Don't do it, DiNozzo. Willpower."
"Top Gun."
"Shh."

...They're taking the guy who can't talk and let McGee on the computer? Did he even need to stay there? He could have gone with them. Waild usually work with Steiner, who did Royals and Loyals and tend to keep McGee away from the action, maybe he learned it that way, use McGee in action scenes only if nobody else is there... *flashback Jetlag with McGee not moving away from the car* or maybe they don't think he's useful in an action scene. (-1). I'm going to hope it's not his opinion but Steiner's influence and wait for his next work.

Photobucket

Awww, Tony and McGee phoof! With the side little look from Tony!

Photobucket

Ziva is talking about Eli too. "Fathers... they make, uh, mistakes. Mistakes that sometimes require a lot of forgiving."

Photobucket
Photobucket
Photobucket

Tony has to participate. Stop talking before you hurt yourself more.

Photobucket
Photobucket

I actually exclaimed 'Tony!' out loud when he drank that. It's bad in the way it show how they wrote Tony as an idiot the two past seasons because I was honestly thinking the new Tony would do something this stupid as forgetting what's in the bottle. Not that I think Tony is this stupid, but the writers would go for this cheap laugh. So (+1) Christopher, for turning again a complaint into something good.

I'm not sure why Tony is not paying attention to the bomb. People said he was looking around in case more people came too close of the bomb but she could have say "run" or something like that. Maybe it was badly filmed, or aiming too much for tiva moment instead of a Tony and Ziva moment, if it makes sense. It looked like Tony didn't know there was a bomb. (For those wondering, Gibbs is still running away and McGee is with the mailman, pulling him behind the car.)

(-1) for the way the scene was done, not for the tiva moment. This one was okay and very pre- Rivkin ish. More flirting people than star-crossed lovers. (+1) for the amelioration compared to the Jetlag scene with the witness. Way better.

Hahahaha! Oh boys, I love you. Yes, they'll need a moment.

There were theories of Ziva meaning Gibbs when talking about her father, but she said baseball was popular in Israel and actually calling Gibbs daddy... a little too much.

Moreover, it fit with her discussion with the daughter. I know Eli is not a good guy, but I don't think he's the monster people want to see in him. Like, he sent her in a suicide mission, a trap, or let her to die in Somalia. Or actually working with Saleem.

Don't even need to explain why working with Saleem makes no sense. Suicide mission? He sent a team of his best. Wanting them to push forward despite their wounds? Yeah, bad. But a) they could have regrouped before going in b) Saleem was a personal mission. Think Hernandez, Ari, La Grenouille, Gibbs for the Renoza.

Not saying it's okay, just that he really, really wanted Saleem's head. Make me curious about who he killed to prompt this. Maybe had a link in Tali's death, or Ziva's mum, if she was killed.

Letting her in Somalia? Chad said there was a presence of the Mossad in there way before the team learnt about Ziva's 'death'.

I think they were looking for her. Team Gibbs was faster and smarter. If using Tony and Tim as bait was smarter. Riskier, probably. Anyways, I don't think he was "Ziva's gone alone? Bah, too bad.". Maybe thinking she was killed instead of prisoner.

He did tried to cut her link to the NCIS, put the blame of the marine's death on her to discredit her, to bring her back to him. He's possessive toward her. She's his daughter and he wants her total loyalty and devotion.

He's not a good father, he's the opposite of DiNozzo's senior in how to relate to their kid, but I really doubt he don't give a damn about her.

Photobucket
Photobucket

And I think this moment is her separating her father from her Director, keeping the good memories despite the bad one.

Photobucket

Conclusion: I'm kinda pleased. There is a definitive amelioration over Jetlag and I'll be less apprehensive next time. There's still work to do, make the shipping moment less anvilly if they really have to be there, not being scared of using McGee or Tony competently in action scenes…

But for this one, the good moments were more numerous than the bad one.

Totally agree with you about Ziva and her dad. And that this episode was way better than I'd hoped for. Also, everyone is so pretty!

An Imagineer is someone who designs rides for Disney theme parks. Tony either hates Disney or theme parks. I do not even know.

[identity profile] schtroumph-c.livejournal.com 2010-10-30 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe it was the combination baseball/Disney. No wait, I just got it. McGee wanted to be Imagineer when he was a kid and Tony got a reminder of how geeky his McGeek can be.
